The College of Business Administration has officially announced that Michael Hu is the new Bridgestone Chair.

Hu was named to the position by George Stevens, dean of the College of Business Administration, after a committee reviewed applications during the fall semester. Hu, a professor of marketing and international business has been teaching at Kent State since 1981.

“I am greatly honored,” Hu said. “This is the pinnacle of our career. It is something that everyone aspires to.”

His responsibilities will be to merge research and academics as well as to help support the business community in the international arena. He will still be teaching, but he will have the added responsibilities of the position, which take effect immediately.

One of Hu’s goals is to develop the academic reputation of Kent State in international business, a field he has worked in for several years.

He has published more than 100 academic articles in numerous business and marketing trade journals.

At Kent State, Hu won the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1994 and was a finalist last year for the Distinguished Scholar Award.

As the Bridgestone Chair, Hu said he “hopes to make a contribution to the college and university at a different level.”

“The college is delighted to have him,” said Larry Marks, associate dean of the College of Business Administration. “He has worked internationally with the Chinese and teaches at the MBA and Ph.D. level.”

Since he started at the College of Business Administration, Hu has conducted several workshops in China. Five years ago he also taught Chinese Business in Hong Kong for a semester. In 1985, Hu was involved in an international student exchange program in Beijing where he took 30 business students to learn about business and marketing.

Hu earned a Ph.D. in management science/marketing from the University of Minnesota and worked as a marketing researcher for AT&T prior to coming to Kent State.

He replaced John Ryans, a professor of marketing and international business who served as the Bridgestone Chair for 10 years prior to his retirement this past summer.

Hu is excited to get started at the position.

“I really look forward to doing as much for the college and the university in the new appointment,” Hu said.
