Planting trees, recycling to save the environment

- Matt Dillon/Staff Writer

Kent State students can now help save the environment through a new student organization, Students Eliminating Environmental Destruction. SEED was started at the beginning of the 1997 Fall semester, said Dena Berliner, president of the organization.

"The organization's major goal is to educate and inform people about environmental destruction, both locally and nationally," Berliner said.

SEED's biggest project this semester is to plant trees in Stow, said Brian Leopold, a member of SEED.

"We are going to plant trees in parks in Stow," Leopold said. "The trees that were previously there died of Dutch Elm's disease and we want to replenish the environment by planting more trees."

Currently, there are 15 members of SEED. Anyone interested in helping save the environment should look into joining, Berliner said.

"We focus on recycling a lot," he said. "If any of our members think a recycling bin should be placed somewhere, we try to put one there."

Berliner said SEED is planning to have speakers for Earth Day and is planning a fundraiser to help with their events.

Both Berliner and Leopold definitely said they agree that environmental awareness is increasing.
