New Dickens interpretation lives up to expectations
The Dickens name remains, but the people, places and period have all been changed in "Great Expectations," Alfonso Cuaron's scintillating - and wildly free - adaptation of one of the most beloved of English novels. Dickens' classic has been filmed several times before, most memorably by David Lean in 1946, and Cuaron wisely doesn't attempt to compete either with earlier movie versions or even, in many ways, with the novel.
