Keeping it growing green, that's S.E.E.D.'s game

Environmental group hopes to register officially

Yesterday was Earth Day, but many would not have known it. Presently, Kent State does not have a registered, active environmental organization, but one group of students are trying to change that.

Students Eliminating Environmental Destruction, or S.E.E.D., will be an official group registered with the Office of Campus Life when the paperwork is completed. They are holding meetings at 8 p.m. every Wednesday in Room 302 in the Student Center.

"Right now we are still throwing around ideas...our short-term goals are to encourage more recycling and discourage littering," said Amanda Arkow, a member of S.E.E.D. and a sophomore in applied conflict management.

S.E.E.D. currently has about 12 members, Arkow said, and they are looking for more members to support their efforts to raise awareness across campus.

Another member, Brian Leopold, a sophomore in elementary education, said the group is still in its organizational stages but has discussed possibilities for the future, such as a yearly tree donation in honor of May 4, and having a monthly street clean-up. The cafeterias' use of Styrofoam is another problem the group wants to address, he said.

Leopold said they may combine efforts with Solid Waste Management in its recycling promotions. Leopold said he is excited for S.E.E.D. to be recognized as an official group.

"I really think having the university's support will make a big difference," Leopold said.
