The Office of the Registrar has a new web site and a new mascot to help students
navigate it.
His name is Reggie and his address is www.registrars.kent.edu/home.
This newest addition to the Kent State University web site community was put on
line Wednesday and has over 200 HTML documents, said Registrar Robert.
Sikula"This is the beginning step for where we want to go in the future," Sikula
said. "We wanted to get a site out there. We wanted to be able to operate 24
hours a day, seven days a week."
Primary services the site currently include registration calendars, deadlines for
registration, information on student records and information on how to obtain
transcripts and Kent Academic Program System (KAPS) reports.
Sikula said there is also a request for a "Schedule of Classes" booklet.
The site is the first step in getting the information out to the students, Sikula
said.
"The main goal is to get a usable site out there," said Michelle Craig, network
systems coordinator and developer of the web site. "We tried to develop it from a
student's perspective so that it is more helpful, informational and easy to
navigate. That's why it took awhile for us to get it on line."
The web site took three months to develop and three staff members in the
Registrar's Office will have to be trained on HTML and various softwares.
The office had to also wait for new server software to arrive because the current
software was not compatible, Craig said.
"We lingered a little bit because it's a little more than a web site," Sikula
said. "We want so much out there and we needed to get it out there."
Making the web site easier to navigate are two recent additions. One is a search
tool that can seek out words throughout the entire web site. The other is Reggie.
"It's something more interesting," Sikula said. "It's a little unique and fun
addition to our web site. He's there to greet students at every page."
Students can give suggestions to the Registrar's Office on the web site via a
response form.
"This web site allows us to provide timely information to students," Sikula said.
"Our web site is the beginning structure for students to eventually do most of
their transactions and needs."
By February, the Schedule of Classes will be available on the web site. Craig
said the on line registration will be available next fall for the Spring of 1999.
