Bicyclists pedal to block Kent rush-hour

Traffic can be expected to be heavier than usual tomorrow, but it won’t be because of an accident, parade or broken traffic lights.

Bikes will be causing the holdup. Students Eliminating Environmental Destruction will be organizing Earth Day events, and the bicycles will be part of it.

“It’s to show that Bicyclist s have a right to the road, too,” said Andy Nelsen, organizer for the event.

Interested participants will be leaving the Risman Plaza at 5 p.m. The route will take them down Lincoln Street into Kent then back up Main Street to campus and returning to the Student Center.

Nelsen, sophomore photojournalism major, said the purpose is to slow down traffic and make motorists aware of the presence of Bicyclist s. Nelsen is expecting large groups of bicycles to take part in the event, causing a disruption in already slow rush-hour traffic.

Critical Mass, a bike advocacy group, is running the event to show how important bicycles can be and show how Bicyclist s can share the road with cars.

“People often don’t give them (Bicyclist s) the courtesy they deserve on the road,” Nelsen said. “They’ll throw bottles and cans at them and yell profanities at them.”
